Where should each turn land?

Tell it how many episodes your season has. It tells you where the first turn, the midpoint, the low point and the finale should fall.

Your season

Our own standard is 8–10.

A season that runs out of story at episode six and limps to ten is the most common problem in serial drama, and it's worse in AI drama, where every extra scene costs credits. Deciding the shape first saves both.

The planner uses a simple four-turn structure, spaced across however many episodes you choose. Here's how it might look with a story drawn from a real pain point our audience talks about: Eleanor's mother needs more help, and James assumes, without asking, that Eleanor will cut back at work.

No views, subscribers or income are promised. This is a planning aid based only on your own inputs. Always follow YouTube's current policies in YouTube Help.

A beat sheet you can copy

  1. Episode 1: the ordinary life and the crack in it.
  2. Up to the first turn: the crack widens. Each episode ends with one new piece of information.
  3. First turn to midpoint: she tries to fix things the old way. It half works.
  4. Midpoint: something reveals what she really wants.
  5. Midpoint to low point: she goes after it, and the cost rises.
  6. Low point: the plan falls apart.
  7. Finale: the choice. End on the decision, and leave the consequence for next season.

Why a fixed season length helps

Knowing the episode count lets you budget every scene. When you know the midpoint is episode five, you know episodes three and four can't spend their running time on new subplots. It also gives viewers a promise: this story has an end.

Questions people ask

What if my story needs twelve episodes?

The planner works for any number. Just check whether every episode moves the main question forward. If two in a row don't, cut one.

Should the finale reveal everything?

Answer the season's main question, and open one new one. That's what brings people back for the next season.
